How Communities Can Inventory GHG Emissions and Removals by Forests and Trees
Greenhouse gas (GHG) inventories and climate action plans are essential to make and measure progress toward climate goals. The actions taken by cities and local communities will be key to meeting the ambitious climate targets set by national governments and international agreements. However, many cities and communities’ GHG inventories do not include CO2 emissions and removals (sequestration) by forests and trees, despite international enthusiasm for nature-based climate solutions. This is partially due to a lack of guidance and complexity around incorporating them. As cities and communities ramp up forest- and tree-based climate change mitigation actions, they will need to measure how their forests and trees have already contributed to their carbon balance sheet.

Building on the updated Global Protocol for Community-Scale Greenhouse Gas Emission Inventories (GPC), this webinar — organized by World Resources Institute (WRI), C40 Cities, and ICLEI — presents a new, globally standardized, and flexible methodology that allows cities and communities to estimate CO2 emissions and removals by forests and trees. Speakers will outline the methods covered in the new guidance, Supplemental Guidance for Forests and Trees, as well as showcase how cities and communities report their results and how to include them in their emissions reduction targets. They will also discuss how cities and communities have already inventoried GHG emissions and removals by forests and trees for more holistic climate action planning by outlining how some communities have used these methods. This will be followed by a panel discussion featuring diverse perspectives and experiences from cities that have user-tested the guidance, city climate action planners, and institutional partners, concluding with a live audience Q&A session.
